Hunt Slonem
b. 1951, Kittery, ME
Hunt Slonem is an internationally recognized American artist celebrated for his vibrant paintings of birds, butterflies, rabbits, and other recurring subjects drawn from nature, history, and spirituality. Through expressive brushwork, luminous color, and richly textured surfaces, Slonem transforms familiar imagery into rhythmic, meditative compositions that balance representation with abstraction.
Birds hold particular importance in his work, inspired in part by the living aviaries he has maintained in his studios. His repeated subjects function like visual mantras, revealing subtle variations in gesture, color, and personality. Slonem’s work is held in major public collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and is recognized for its joyful, mysterious, and unmistakably personal visual language.
