Helen Oh is a Chicago artist whose still-life paintings bring close observation and luminous surfaces to natural and collected objects. Working primarily in oil on panel, she arranges seashells, glass vessels, model sailboats, and classical statuettes into carefully balanced compositions, often enriched with gold or silver leaf. Her fascination with shells connects their sculptural beauty to questions of time, fragility, and marine ecology.
Her arrangements also take on the character of human relationships. Through proximity, scale, and placement, objects seem to draw together, stand apart, or quietly command attention. Pairings evoke companionship and intimacy, while the spaces between objects can suggest distance, tension, or solitude. Each object maintains its own identity while participating in a larger group, creating a subtle emotional dynamic. Born in Seoul, Korea, Oh studied at the School of Visual Arts, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League of New York. Her background in gilding and painting conservation informs her approach to materials and technique. She teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Arts.
