Travels throughout Europe and extended residencies in Italy, Spain, France and especially Ireland have all played a significant part in the direction of Pylant’s work over the last few decades. During the early 1990‘s she purchased a thatched cottage in Ireland as her summer studio. The rugged melancholy of Ireland’s northwest coast and it’s ancient stone circles spiritually connected her to centuries past. Her painting series “Standing Stones” and “Celtic 1997-2003” were directly influenced by the many pilgrimages she made to the ancient sites in Ireland, Scotland and England. Teaching painting in Italy in 2006, 2007 and 2010 prompted a return to her love of painting landscape and architecture. Although directly influenced by Renaissance and Romanesque architecture the “Portal Series” paintings contemplate the personal significance and loss of particular people, pets and places in her life and symbolically represent a metaphorical threshold between life and death.
